Commencement Photos 2010
Defiance College awarded diplomas to 235 graduates on Sunday, May 9, during a noontime ceremony under bright blue skies on the campus colonnade. Dr. Vincent Harding, an associate of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., delivered the commencement address. Graduating senior Austin Kleman of Sidney, Ohio, was awarded the bronze Pilgrim Medal, the most prestigious award presented by the college, recognizing “reliance in self, pride in work, courage in conscience, strength in education, and faith in God.” Beverly Harrington was awarded the title Registrar Emerita upon her recent retirement after a 40-year career with the college. And in an emotional tribute to a long-time Defiance College administrator and faculty member, President Mark Gordon presented the family of Dean Emeritus Richard W. Stroede with a plaque recognizing establishment of the Richard W. Stroede Scholarship. Dr. Stroede was scheduled to appear at commencement ceremonies, but he had been battling a life-threatening illness for several months and died on Saturday, May 8. Son, Andrew Stroede, and daughter, Beth Moehle, accepted the plaque in honor of their father.

About the Play
“Obsessed by suspicions of infidelity, King Leontes puts his pregnant wife, Hermione, on trial for her life – coming to his senses only when his actions have cost him both wife and children. Flu Prevention
To Faculty, Staff and Students,
As you may know, flu can be spread easily from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to prevent the spread of flu at Defiance College. We need your help to accomplish this.
We are working closely with the Defiance County Health Department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about the best steps to take concerning our institution. There are no reported cases of H1N1 in Defiance or surrounding counties. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available to us.
Here are a few things you can do to help:
- Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
- Practice respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth; germs are spread this way.
- Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. A fever is a temperature taken with a thermometer that is equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Look for possible signs of fever: if the person feels very warm, has a flushed appearance, or is sweating or shivering.
- Stay home if you have flu or flu-like illness for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medications (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen).
Seasonal flu vaccine is available in the Health Center for $10. The 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine will be offered when it becomes available (predicated mid to late October).
People at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 flu complications include: pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes). For more information about priority groups for vaccination, visit www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/acip.htm. If you have any questions please stop in the Health Center or call at #2527.
