DC Choral Union to present sacred cantata during Holy Week

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College Choral Union will present two performances of the sacred cantata The Seven Last Words of Christ by Theodore Dubois at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 400 Wayne Ave., Defiance, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday of Holy Week.

The Good Friday performance on March 25 will be part of the Defiance community Good Friday services held at St. Paul’s United Methodist in 30 minute increments from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. Each service’s sermon and scriptures are delivered from members of different churches in the area. The DC Choral Union, accompanied by organ, harp, and timpani, will present a movement of the sacred cantata at each service.

The Holy Saturday performance on March 26 will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist at 4 p.m. with the chorus accompanied by chamber orchestra.

Soloists include soprano Lindsay Kasmer of Defiance, tenor Joe Payne of Defiance, and baritone Adam Bjorlin of Wauseon.

Both performances are conducted by Defiance College Director of Music Programs Andrew Schultz. He leads the DC Chamber Singers, Choral Union, music for DC Players productions, and teaches music theory, conducting, and voice. Andrew also works closely with the instrumental ensembles to ensure the success of each music program presented at Defiance College.

The Defiance College Choral Union consists of DC students, college personnel, and community members from all over Northwest Ohio. The spring concert is one of three annual events presented by the ensemble including the W. Oscar Jones Choral Festival and the Annual performance of Handel’s Messiah. The group rehearses on Monday nights and is always happy to welcome new members.
