MC Harper
Professor of English

Coordinator of the Global Civilization Program
Office: Dana Hall 5

Bio
Professor Harper is dedicated to the study of a society's literature and language arts in relation to the whole of that society, including its history, philosophy, religions, sciences, technologies, and various arts. Because of this, she remains a student of interdisciplinary learning and seeks to bring this understanding into her classrooms. The courses that she teaches at Defiance College serve the majors of Integrated Language Arts and Middle Childhood Language Arts and, also, the general education program. She believes that students learn best when they are in an active learning environment, so her classes involve much open talk, questioning, and experimentation with literature, creative writing and other arts, culture studies, history, and technologies related to reading and writing.

Progeny, the literary magazine of Defiance College, is published yearly and is handled by Professor Harper and a staff of dedicated and creative students. The Progeny editor and associate editors come from a number of majors, and they encourage all students, faculty, and staff members of Defiance College to express themselves through poetry, fiction or essay writing, photography and other visual arts.

Professor Harper did her undergraduate work at four colleges and universities, including St. Mary of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas, and Montana State University at Bozeman, Montana, where she received a B. A. with highest honors from the interdisciplinary Honors Program. Her studies crossed the disciplines of literature, art history, and biology, all of which laid the foundation for her current work at Defiance College. She continued her studies at Bowling Green State University, where she took a joint Ph. D. in creative writing and American literature with a cultural theory emphasis.
