Dr. Spiro Mavroidis' Faculty Web Page
Education
- B.S, M.S, and Ph.D. in biology from Cleveland State University
Bio
Professor Spiro Mavroidis was born in Samos (birth place of Pythagoras), Greece and came to the United States at the age of eight. He came to Defiance College in the Fall of 2002 after teaching at Mount Union College and Lakeland Community College. He teaches Zoology, Field Zoology, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology, and Honors Anatomy. His research interests are in thermoregulation and energetics in amphibians and reptiles. Recent research has focused on body temperature regulation in garter snakes and massasauga rattlesnakes, and energy budget comparisons in two populations of garter snakes found in different thermal environments. Also, he has conducted amphibian surveys at the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreational Area (CVNRA).
He has been named McMaster Fellow for three years and is currently involved with local and international watershed research. He serves as faculty fellow to the Defiance College board of trustees and is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists.
He and his wife, Cindy, enjoy many outdoor activities such as hiking, fly-fishing, and bird watching. In addition, conducting field research gives him many more opportunities to be outdoors. He’s a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan that has shed many tears over the years, but still watches most of their Sunday games.
