Spring Semester
This one credit course is designed for first and second year students who wish to explore majors and careers. Students will gain an understanding of the process of career decision-making. They will learn how interests, skills, and values relate to career choices, and acquire information about educational and career options. Emphasis will be placed on self-evaluation, decision-making and goal setting. By the end of the course students should:
- Appreciate career decision-making as an on-going, lifelong process.
- Identify and express their interests, skills, values and personality traits and relate this information to the world of work
- Know how to use campus and on-line resources in exploring occupations and educational programs
This one credit course is designed to prepare junior and senior students for their job search. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Prepare a professional resume for use in job search
- Prepare a professional cover letter for use in job search
- Give a professional interview with their new interviewing skills
- Identify sources of job information and best methods to look for a job
This one credit course is designed to prepare students for the graduate and professional school application process. At the end of the course, students should be knowledgeable about the basic differences between Master’s, Doctoral and Professional degrees, information to include in a personal statement, when and how to apply, how many schools to apply to, preparing for standardized tests, asking for faculty letters of recommendation, preparing a curriculum vita (CV) or resume, and how to make oneself a strong candidate for admission. Teaching methodologies will include lecture, group discussion, oral presentations, journal entries and readings.
