The Leadership Certificate Program (LCP) will begin in Fall 2011 and is a self-paced leadership program that allows you to complete as much or as little within the program as you would like.  There are four different levels of the certificate (platinum, gold, silver, and bronze) and each has differing requirements.

The program allows for you to meet other students, gain valuable skills to apply to your extracurricular activities, and sets you up to have a distinctive DC resume!

What is involved with the program?
There are several activities from which to chose, including:

    • Leadership Workshops and Reflection Activities- These programs are taught several times by our certified leadership coaches.  The reflection activities are in the form of a writing exercise which pertains to your experiences.

    • Service Experiences- Service events will be announced periodically throughout the semester.

    • Mentorship-You will choose your mentor and meet with them at least one time a semester.

How do I earn a certificate?

    Platinum Leadership Certificate

    • Attend ten to thirteen (10-13) leadership workshops
    • Complete ten hours of community service outside of your student organization.
    • Meet with a self-selected mentor at least once a semester.
    • Write a reflective paper on Leadership in the Future, Managing Groups, and a Personal Leadership Statement.
    • Take the Leadership Assessment.

    Gold Leadership Certificate

    • Attend seven to nine (7-9) leadership workshops
    • Complete seven hours of community service outside of your student organization.
    • Meet with a self-selected mentor at least once a semester.
    • Write a reflective paper on Managing Groups, and a Personal Leadership Statement.
    • Take the Leadership Assessment.

    Silver Leadership Certificate

    • Attend five to six (5-6) leadership workshops
    • Complete five hours of community service outside of your student organization.
    • Meet with a self-selected mentor at least once a semester.
    • Write a Personal Leadership Statement.
    • Take the Leadership Assessment.

    Bronze Leadership Certificate

    • Attend three to four (3-4) leadership workshops.
    • Complete three hours of community service outside of your student organization.
    • Meet with a self-selected mentor at least once a semester.
    • Take the Leadership Assessment.

At the end of each year, you will be awarded a certificate based on the work you put in and get a sweet prize in either a ticket to an exclusive sporting event (Tigers or Redwings Game) and/or exclusive fun events.

    Who can participate?
Every enrolled student may participate in the program.

What if I only have a few semesters and have a heavy schedule?
The nice thing about the program is that you can stop and start when you want to and can spread it over several semester or years.  There is no pressure and this program allows for you to go at your own pace to gain experience, confidence, and self-motivation.

How do I choose a mentor?
You will self-select a mentor who can be any faculty, staff, or your coach on campus.  You will need to talk to this person individually and formally ask them to be your mentor.  Choose wisely and use our tips to find one.  If you are having trouble finding a mentor contact Brian Starkel at bstarkel@defiance.edu.

Once you find a mentor you need to email the name to bstarkel@defiance.edu.

Where do I find the Leadership Assessment and
    other writing activities?

These resources are found under the leadership reflection resources and can be taken and submitted at any time but need to be done in the bronze to platinum order with the leadership assessment being done first.
