What is the Defiance College Network? The computers on campus are connected through our local area network "LAN." This network opens the possibility to share information between computers on campus, as well as access the Internet.
Your Responsibility as a User Having signed the "Computer Use Procedural Contract" you have agreed to abide by the Defiance College Computer Use Policy. This is available in the student handbook and on the college website. Failure to abide by this policy may result in loss of computer privileges, judicial referral, or possibly criminal prosecution.
Accessing the Defiance College Network from a Computer Lab In order to access the resources supplied by the College Network, you must "log on" to a computer with your username and password. This will allow you access to your shared drive, 50MB of personal network storage space, and other shared drives. Your personal space is available through the “My Documents" link on the "Start" menu, or through the U:\ link in "My Computer." The other common share that all students should have access to is AcademicD. This is commonly mapped to the H:\ and is accessible by opening "My Computer." AcademicD is the communal share of Defiance College. Many of the professors have folders here for you to access that allow you to retrieve and turn in assignments, view class notes, etc.
Using Defiance College's Onestop Web Application Logging on to the Defiance College Onestop Web Application presents you with several options including the ability to view your gradecard, class schedule, college transcript, billing statement, and other information. To get started, simply go to www.defiance.edu/onestop. You will then be prompted to login with your username and password, granting you access to Onestop. Once logged in, you will be presented with a menu of options available to you.
WebCT at Defiance College WebCT is a tool used by many of the professors here at Defiance College for distance learning and course enhancement. It is used to improve the exchange of information electronically, be it syllabi, assignments, or quizzes. You can access WebCT from any computer connected to the Internet. The address to access WebCT at Defiance College is http://www.defiance.edu:8900. It is also accessible by clicking on the "Current Students" and then "WebCT" link on the home page, www.defiance.edu. To login you will need to use your username and password.
Wireless Computer Network at Defiance College You can connect to the Defiance College Wireless Network using your wireless enabled device with either an 802.11B or 802.11G card. Hotspots are readily available nearly anywhere on the Defiance College campus.
Connecting to the Defiance College Network from Your Residence Hall Room To connect your personal computer to the Defiance College Network for use in your residence hall room, we recommend the following:
Windows XP Operating System,
10/100 Mbps Ethernet Card,
Network Patch Cable with an RJ45 end (not a telephone cable), and
Antivirus software.
We provide all students with a copy of antivirus software, which is mandatory to be installed on all personal computers prior to connecting to the Defiance College Network. All residence hall rooms have a "port per pillow" connection available for each student living in the room.
Keeping Your Computer Healthy If your computer is connected to the Internet in any way, it is susceptible to many types of harmful malware including worms, viruses, and spyware. In order to keep your computer free of these malicious programs, here are a few things you should regularly maintain on your pc:
Keep your virus definitions up to date on the anti-virus program,
Install operating system and software updates when they become available,
Use a firewall program (Windows XP includes one), and
Use an anti-spyware software program.
There are many other things you can do to prevent an infection of malicious software, but these four simple steps will greatly reduce your chances.
Using Your Defiance College E-mail All currently enrolled students who have signed the "Computer Use Procedural Contract" have an active Defiance College e-mail address. The address is comprised of your first initial, first 16 characters of your last name, and three digits dependent on if others share your first initial and last name. For example, John Doe may be jdoe001@defiance.edu and Jane Doe may be jdoe002@defiance.edu. To login and check your e-mail, simply go to the Defiance College website, www.defiance.edu, and click on the Access E-mail link located at the bottom of every page. You will login with the first part of your e-mail address and the same password you use to log on to the computers. Since it is a web based e-mail client, you have access to it from anywhere having Internet capability.
Computer Labs on Campus Defiance College computers have many software packages installed including the Microsoft Office Professional 2003, Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, Learning Plus, and Health Management System.
