Fall Semester 2008 and Spring Semester 2009 (during the academic year only)
PURPOSE
The Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program, created by the Ohio General Assembly in 1989, permits high school students to complete college course work for high school and/or college credit. The program broadens the range of choices through which qualified students may complete requirements for high school graduation.
The program is intended to provide expanded opportunities for appropriately qualified high school students to experience course work at the college level. Any high school student admitted to a course will be expected and required to perform at the same level as the College's regularly admitted students.
Defiance College is pleased to offer the opportunity for post-secondary enrollment to high school students who wish to enrich and supplement their high school academic program.
BENEFITS
The benefits for a high school student participating in this program at Defiance College include:
- The expansion of the high school curriculum through more challenging and in-depth courses;
- The opportunity to earn college credit while in high school;
- The personal enrichment and growth that one can experience at an established private liberal arts college in Northwest Ohio;
- The experience of interacting with college students;
- The experience of participating in a college atmosphere.
CHALLENGES
The challenges for a high school student participating in this program at Defiance College include:
- The increased responsibility for learning;
- The increased need for good time management skills to balance the demands of both high school and college course work;
- The heightened academic competition with older college students;

The State of Ohio Department of Education has made effective October 1, 1999, through the amended Substitute House Bill 282, the following requirement:
"(F) A REQUIREMENT THAT A STUDENT MAY NOT ENROLL IN ANY SPECIFIC COLLEGE COURSE THROUGH THE PROGRAM IF THE STUDENT HAS TAKEN HIGH SCHOOL COURSES IN THE SAME SUBJECT AREA AS THAT COLLEGE COURSE AND HAS FAILED TO ATTAIN A CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF AT LEAST 3.0 ON A 4.0 SCALE, OR THE EQUIVALENT, IN SUCH COMPLETED HIGH SCHOOL COURSES.
There is no limit to the number of students considered for the program.
ENROLLMENT
A student participating in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program of Defiance College may enroll for two courses per semester in any fall or spring semester. Course pre-requisites must be met, and enrollment is permitted on a space-available basis in regular college courses. A student will not be officially scheduled into a class until after the Freshman orientation and scheduling in the summer.
CREDIT
Full college credit will be awarded for all courses satisfactorily completed according to the College's established requirements and procedures. Courses completed will be applied toward degree requirements if the student enrolls at Defiance College after high school graduation.
OPTIONS
The student must select one of the two options at the time of application for admission to the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program, and the decision may not be changed once the application has been submitted to Defiance College. The student cannot combine the two options.
OPTION A: This option permits eligible students to enroll in college courses for college credit. Students electing this option will be required to pay all costs incurred, including tuition, books, materials, and fees. A cost of the prevailing tuition rate per credit hour will be charged. Tuition and special fees are due and payable in full on or before Registration Day (the first day of the semester). The school district will determine if high school credit will be awarded for the college course(s) completed under this option. Your grades will not be calculated into your high school grade point average.
OPTION B: This option permits eligible students to enroll in two college courses per semester for college and high school graduation credit. The college will furnish all textbooks associated with the course(s). The home school district will pay the college tuition, fees, books, and materials from its state basic aid allocation. Your grades will be calculated into your high school grade point average.
