Cost Effective Academic Opportunity (CLEP)

We are pleased to tell you about an exciting and cost effective academic opportunity available through Defiance College - the College Level Examination Program, or CLEP.

What is CLEP?
This nationally available credit-by-examination program allows students like you to take a test of knowledge that you may already possess. The credits earned will count directly toward your undergraduate degree. By successfully passing CLEP exams and thus earning college credits, you may be able to reduce the time required for your degree by one or two semesters. The potential for saving money is tremendous! This is equivalent to receiving an additional scholarship and earning credit toward your degree - without spending time in the classroom. The credits you receive do not impact your GPA and allow you to complete your degree in 4 years or less.

What are CLEP exams?
These are national standardized exams in such subject areas as science, math, English, foreign language, and history. The cost is a $65 national fee and a $25 administration fee per test. An additional fee of $60 per credit hour is assessed at Defiance College to have the credit added to one's transcript. However, the $60.00 per hour fee is waived for freshmen, if exams are taken prior to initial enrollment at Defiance College.

Who should take advantage of the program?
Students who have done well in high school should seriously consider this opportunity. Research shows that students with a 24 ACT composite or higher generally do well on the CLEP tests.

Which exams should I take?
You should take the exams in the subjects in which you excelled in high school. However, if you have Advanced Placement (AP) credit or were enrolled in college while in high school through the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program, you should be careful not to repeat a subject. We do not recommend that you take exams in your major field of study or in an area in which you have a particular interest. If, for example, you have done well in science, but will major in business, you may want to take the exams that meet the science requirement. We can help you with your selection of exams.

What do students say about the program?
Those who take tests in the summer and do well often wish they had taken more during the summer. Those who do not take advantage of the summer program often wish that they had after realizing the benefits of obtaining credit-by-examination. Both groups have taken exams after school began.

When are the tests offered?
Defiance College is a national site for CLEP testing, so the tests are offered on our campus. The exams are available here on:

June 6, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
July 11, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
August 8, 2008 at at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Each year we have over 30 freshmen students who take advantage of the program at Defiance College. Remember, you only have to show a proficiency in the subject. You do not have to get 100% of the answers correct. Check out the website to learn more about these exams. There are study guides available for each exam.
