Bio
Michele has 31 years teaching experience in the Ohio Public Schools prior to instructing at Defiance College. She began her career as a Title One Reading Teacher in the Toledo Public Schools before moving to the Defiance area teaching in the Paulding District. Her experience ranges from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Upon earning her Masters in Special Education, LDBD, she taught learning disabled students for several years spending the last 17 years teaching Kindergarten and Title One Reading and Math classes. Michele’s involvement with the Ohio Education Association as a local Rep. and Association President, allowed her the opportunity to work closely with the administration and teachers providing in-service opportunities, negotiating contracts, collaborating with parents and community members on levies, fund raisers and after school programs. In addition to teaching, she facilitated teachers through summer workshops and after school in-service programs for the Ohio Department of Education. In the spring of 2006 Michele joined Defiance College as an Intern Supervisor then continued on as an Instructor of Early Childhood Education the following fall semester. She supervises student teachers as well as Beginning and Advanced methods students. Michele teaches the following courses in Early Childhood Education: Foundations of Early Childhood Education, Phonics and Emergent Literature, Reading, Math and Science methods, Expressive Arts, Becoming a Professional II and III and Math in the Content Area. Her Defiance College involvement includes Scholarship Days, Faculty Advisor for APPLE and Student Life Committee Chair along with other subcommittee of the Education Division.
“I feel it is important for students to learn to collaborate with other education majors outside the classroom setting”. In 2007 the APPLE (Achieving Positive Professional Learning Experiences) became an official organization for Defiance College Education Majors. “As faculty advisor, I have proudly observed our future teachers create and present programs, volunteer their time and become involved in their own professional growth.”
Michele is married to Tom, and together they enjoy traveling and visiting their three children Kevin (Dawn) of Columbus, OH; Julie of Santa Monica, Ca; and Jennifer of Hollywood, Ca. She loves hanging out with her grandsons Ethan and Owen, walking, reading, researching new ways to connect her college students to best practices in the teaching profession and spending time at the lake.
