The Master of Arts in Education (MAE), grounded in the college’s mission, is dedicated to enhancing and improving the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and competencies of current and future professionals in the fields of education and sport coaching. We are committed to preparing lifelong professionals in theory and research, becoming reflective facilitators of learning, and as competent leaders in creating a community of learners in diverse learning environments.

Sport Coaching Concentration
The Sport Coaching Concentration is designed for leaders in school sport, club sports and camps, and other physical activity delivery systems (athletic leagues, YMCA, parks and recreation, etc.). This program offers graduate candidates a strong background in the academic areas that inform effective and positive coaching. The framework is that coaches are teachers foremost, and that learning to coach is an on-going, lifelong pursuit. The research and theory examined and critically considered in the program provides graduate candidates with the tools and skills to successfully pursue this very important work of committing to reflective practice as a sport coach.

Teacher Education Licensure Programs
Our licensure program in Adolescent to Young Adult and Intervention Specialist fulfills the state of Ohio requirement toward eligibility to earn a license. The licensure programs prepares in- and pre-service teachers with critical and creative thinking skills for developing innovative instructional strategies and to use strategies to create safe and respectful learning environments, and to develop attitudes for quality and effective teaching of every child. Further, through these programs candidates will develop skills as responsible researchers.

Professional Education Teacher Licensure (PETL) Program
The Professional Education Teacher Licensure (PETL) is a licensure only program design for those individuals with an earned undergraduate degree from Defiance College or any other regionally accredited college or university. The licensure programs are approved by the Ohio Board of Regents and meet the Ohio Department of Education licensure requirements. Additionally, Defiance College Teacher Education Program is accredited by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Through PETL individuals can pursue the Adolescent to Young Adult (grades 7-12) in Life Science or Life Science and Chemistry or the Multi-Age (grades k-12) in Visual Arts. This program requires 100 hours of field experience and 12-week student teaching. However, individuals holding a current and valid teaching license are only required to fulfill a six-week practicum or student teaching.
