208. DIVORCECARE
13 tape series. 35 minutes each SH-A
DivorceCare is a program designed to equip churches to conduct ongoing ministry to separated and divorced people. The DivorceCare program takes a biblical approach to divorce, separation and related issues such as reconciliation, remarriage, forgiveness and the effect of divorce on children and families. DivorceCare emphasizes that real healing from the intense pain of divorce must begin with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The program features three key elements: training of church divorce recovery leaders and facilitators, videotape teaching materials to address divorce issues in a biblical context, and support group strategies to facilitate an ongoing ministry to divorced and separated people. A leaders guide is included.
A. MAKING DIVORCECARE WORK: Divorce ministry will never be easy, but this videotape and the accompanying book help you streamline the task of planning and launching a DivorceCare group in your church. This tape should be viewed by all church staff and lay leaders involved in your divorce ministry. Topics include: developing a divorce ministry strategy, how to get started, finding and equipping leaders, and promoting your DivorceCare group. This tape is designed to encourage and assist you in the challenging task of ministering to people experiencing separation or divorce.
B. THE ROAD HOME: This videotape offers another perspective. You’ll meet two couples who were on the road to divorce. They struggled with hurt, anger, separation and seemingly unsolvable problems. But in those dark days, both couples found healing and comfort that gave them the hope needed to take the first steps toward restoring their relationships. If your marriage is in trouble, if you are separated or divorced or know someone who is, spend a little time with this tape. Find out what made the difference and how these people avoided what appeared to be inevitable divorce. Find out how they found the road home.
1. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME?: This video is designed to help group participants begin to feel comfortable about being a part of the group. On the video you will meet people who felt the same types of emotions the first time they came to such a group. This tape is also designed to build a relationship with new participants by dealing with key concerns affecting them. The group members will leave with the realization that "I am not alone," that there are other people who understand what they are feeling.
2. THE ROAD TO HEALING/FINDING HELP: This video will help DivorceCare group members understand the extent of their emotional injuries and how to begin the long healing process. The session begins with an exploration of just how significant the damage of divorce is. DivorceCare members will see the effects of "tearing apart" the one-flesh marriage relationship described in Genesis 2:24. Also included is a segment designed to help members identify the losses they have experienced, the importance of the grieving process and some initial steps they can take to begin the process of healing.
3. FACING YOUR ANGER: This videotape features an interview with Dr. Les Carter of the Minirth-Meier Clinic and co-author of "The Anger Workbook." Dr. Carter helps viewers understand why they are angry and offer some very practical suggestions on how to deal with anger. He explores eight sources of our anger, some coming from external influences in our lives and some of them coming from within. You will also meet people who have dealt with the issue of anger firsthand and learn how they struggled to overcome it.
4. FACING YOUR DEPRESSION: This videotape will help you understand the reasons for depression and how to overcome it. In fact, as you will hear from Dr. Archibald Hart, depression can actually be a healing emotion. This video will help you explore 13 symptoms of depression and a strategy for dealing with the depression that accompanies divorce. Dr. Hart suggests that "we should be a better person after depression than before." This video will help people experiencing divorce begin to see how God can use their experiences to grow and mature.
5. FACING YOUR LONELINESS: This videotape offers healthy solutions for the loneliness that accompanies separation and divorce. Dr. Les Carter explores the causes of loneliness , and viewers will learn that the reasons for feeling lonely go beyond the loss of a husband or wife. Loneliness also has its consequences, and Dr. Carter will help viewers understand some of the pitfalls to avoid when working through lonely feelings. The videotape concludes with encouraging suggestions from Dr. Carter and Dr. Myles Munroe on ways to move out of loneliness to a life of fulfillment.
6. WHAT DOES THE OWNER’S MANUAL SAY?: In this videotape viewers will see that the Bible does offer timeless answers to tough questions about separation, divorce, and remarriage. The video begins by helping viewers gain an understanding of God’s design for marriage and why the biblical options for divorce are so limited. Participants are encouraged to pursue forgiveness and reconciliation whenever possible. When reconciliation is not possible, viewers will see that God does not condemn people who are party to a divorce they did not want and can forgive and restore people who originated divorce for non-biblical reasons.
7. NEW RELATIONSHIPS: The viewers of this videotape will learn the wisdom of taking time to heal before entering another relationship (even though people are telling them to "get on with their life"). They will hear firsthand the consequences of moving too quickly into a relationship from people who have suffered the pain of doing so. The video examines twelve checkpoints to help viewers determine if they are ready for a relationship. For people who have healed enough to begin dating, the tape explores seven steps they can take to help those relationships develop successfully. Also included is a special segment dealing with the issues of sexual desires and temptations. Is it possible for a person who has enjoyed the sexual freedom of marriage to maintain purity as a "single-again?"
8. FINANCIAL SURVIVAL: This videotape helps people going through separation or divorce to focus on the key financial issues and explores techniques to achieve financial stability as quickly as possible, before mistakes are made. You will hear important suggestions on how to deal with the three big "budget-busters"- housing, cars and kids. The tape features an interview with Larry Burkett, who suggests ways to make ends meet in thirteen critical budget categories. Larry’s suggestions are based on biblical concepts and address the specific needs of a person experiencing separation or divorce.
9. KIDCARE 1: In this videotape viewers will learn how divorce affects children of different ages, from preschool through their teen years. The video explores ten mistakes parents make when going through a divorce that can seriously affect their children. Parents will learn that divorce triggers emotional responses of anger, a loss of self-esteem and depression. They’ll hear expert advice on how to help their children through these feelings. The video also features interviews with children who have experienced divorce. This video is also a valuable resource for those without children because they may some day face remarriage to a person with children.
10. KIDCARE 2: What is the long term effect of divorce on a family? What can the single parent, and those around him or her, do to stabilize the children and minimize the damage of divorce? This videotape helps parents deal with these issues and offer positive suggestions to help them parent effectively in the months and years following their divorce. Parents will learn the "E’s" of training a child: Example, Exposure, Experience and Encouragement. They will hear solid advice on how to deal with low self-esteem, a child who withdraws, children who develop aggressive behavior and how to deal with the often complicated issues related to visitation.
11. FORGIVENESS: Getting to the point of forgiveness after divorce is an agonizing process. The hurt and pain are so deep that forgiveness seems impossible. This videotape will help viewers sort through some of the confusion about what forgiveness is- and what it is not. They will see the emotional and physical toll of unforgiveness, and learn how God honors those who do forgive. This is one of the most important videos of the DivorceCare series because forgiveness is the foundation for permanent healing. Lives change and people heal when they can reach the point of true forgiveness.
12. RECONCILIATION: In our times, couples who separate are quickly propelled by the expectations of others towards divorce. Little, if any consideration is given to restoring the relationship and reconciling the marriage. Family, friends, and even some of those in leadership in our churches advise separated people to "get on with your life." This DivorceCare videotape confronts the "get on with your life" phenomenon with an examination of the biblical concept of reconciliation. Viewers will examine eight reasons why they should consider reconciliation and hear practical advice on the process of reconciliation. This tape also features the stories of three couples who successfully reconciled their marriages. You’ll hear candid accounts of the pain, the challenges and the rewards of reconciliation.
13. MOVING ON, GROWING CLOSER TO GOD: There is no denying the hurt, pain and damage that divorce causes. But there is also no denying the good that can come out of divorce. This video is designed to encourage DivorceCare participants to put their hope, their future in God’s hands and to claim the promise of Jeremiah 29:11-13: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

213. IMAGINE: NEW APPROACHES TO THE BIBLE WITH WALTER BRUEGGEMANN
4 parts. 25 minutes each SH - A
In the introduction, Dr. Brueggemann discusses the basic principals he finds useful in approaching biblical texts. In this series he proposes to treat the Bible as a guide to imagining the world in new and often subversive ways.
1. NARRATIVE-TRANSFORMING THE WORLD : This brief story has a great deal to say about the nature of power and how an established social order may be transformed. It suggests that the people who hold the forms of power are not really the people who have power. The narrative serves to legitimate a coup which transfers political power to a marginated person. Dr. Bueggemann examines what this narrative has to say regarding contemporary marginalized people and suggests future events in biblical narrative toward which this story points.
2. MOSES-THE MOUTHPIECE OF GOD: In this speech, which is as pertinent today as it was when Moses first spoke it, Moses was practicing social criticism. When he warned that societal amnesia would bring on destruction, he meant that the fabric of society would be eroded: If you don't care for your neighbor, the vision of justice and peace and freedom will slowly evaporate, and you will be back in an economy of greed and selfishness and destructiveness. The antidote lies in digging deep within the memory to discover that we are taken care of, both in our precariousness and in our abundance.
3.PROPHECY AND THE UNGLUING OF REALITY: Dr. Brueggemann asserts that the prophets were neither reporters, predictors, nor social analysts, but instead they were "poets who exercised an amazingly liberated imagination in helping their contemporaries see something of their life beyond what they would see without the help of this inspired poetry.
4. LAW AND PROVERBS-THE USE OF CREATION: One strength of the imaginative approach to the Bible is that it discovers meaning in texts which are traditionally somewhat overlooked. The first text examined in this segment is a law delivered by Moses in Deuteronomy 15:1-11, stating that slaves should be set free every seventh year. Dr. Brueggemann delves into both the immediate circumstances being addressed by the law and the underlying principles upon which it is based. He finds that the text places conventional relationships, not only between individuals, but also between classes and nations.
214. THE INCOMPARABLE BOOK: MESSAGES FROM THE MEMORY BANKS
Three 20 minute programs SH-A
The Old and New Testaments represent the memory banks of the early Jewish and Christian communities. But are they reliable? Have the Biblical accounts reached us intact? How carefully were the documents copied? What about before things were written down? Were writers telling us the truth? In the words of one youth leader, " It puts Bible scholarship into the language of the video age."

229. KIDS TALK T.V. INSIDE OUT
Seven chapters J
Why teach media literacy in the church? The children in our churches want to figure out how biblical stories relate to the stories they watch on television and in the movies. Of course, elementary school age children, especial nine, ten, and eleven year olds, are not asking explicit questions about Jesus' relationship to Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Terminator" character. Yet their encounter with the media characters challenges them to decide whether the Terminator or Jesus is more real. Elementary children live in the now. They still have concrete conceptions of religion; their primary spiritual interest is figuring out what Jesus did while he was on earth, and why he did it. If they find Jesus' actions interesting and comprehensible, they will consider acting in similar ways. If they find the Terminator more believable, they will emulate him. Children have limited abstract reasoning abilities, they need our help to decode the values. This video will help you and your church's elementary school children develop media literacy with a faith perspective. The scripture references and activities suggested in the guide also will help you and the children discover the ways in which the Bible is relevant to society and to our lives. Study guide included.
