West's Encyclopedia of American Law
Reference KF 154 .W47 1997
Written for non-lawyers, so it's easy to understand. Good place to go for definitions, summaries of major court cases, or practically anything else in the legal field.
Encyclopedia of Gun Control & Gun Rights
Reference KF 3941 .A68 U88 2000
Concentrates on gun control in the US today, but does include historical and some international perspectives.
Encyclopedia of the American Constitution
Reference KF 4548 .E53 2000
Contains articles about important cases and topics the Court has dealt with, such as body searches, capital punishment, civil liberties, etc.
Ohio Revised Code

The paper source for Ohio laws. For online access to Ohio and other state codes, see Lexis/Nexis database.
PAPER INDEXES TO PERIODICAL ARTICLES
Criminal Justice Abstracts (3rd index table)
Indexes journal articles, books, and government documents. Includes abstracts (short summaries) of what the book or article is about. Look up your topic in the subject index in the back of the issue, and then find the numbered citation in the front of the issue.
ONLINE DATABASES
OhioLink databases - Go to www.defiance.edu, click on "Library", and then, "OhioLink Databases." Searchable from off-campus, if you are a registered library patron in good standing. Defiance College doesn't subscribe to every OhioLink database, but we get most of them. The most useful for CJ are:
- Electronic Journal Center - full-text articles from over 6,000 scholarly journals
- Lexis/Nexis - good source for legal articles. Contains both newspaper accounts and articles from legal journals. Also a source for business, medical and general news information.
- SocIndex - good source of articles, conference papers, books on sociological topics, including CJ. Covers some journals back to 1895.
- Sociological Abstracts - good place to find citations to journal articles in the CJ field, which is one of the social sciences
- Academic Search Premier - a general database that covers popular magazines and some scholarly journals
- Social Science Citation Index (ISI Web of Science) - an index to cited references in scholarly sociological journals. Useful to find how authoritative an author is by checking how many times his/her work has been cited
- SIRS Researcher - covers popular magazines and newspaper articles
- Business Source Premier - mainly a business database, but covers CJ business-related topics as jail privatization, corporate crime, etc.
- PsychInfo - good scholarly source for psychological aspects of a topic, such as police stress, the minds of serial killers, effect of discrimination on people, etc.
- America's Newspapers --totally full-text newspaper articles. Wonderful non-scholarly source for CJ topics.
