What is a PERC?

To register, please contact Michelle Call or complete the attached registration form.

A copy of all prior college transcripts is required at the time of scheduling. Please be sure to forward all transcripts to the Center for Adult and Graduate Programs (CAP) Office. Registration is complete upon receiving a copy of the prior college transcript and payment. Defiance College alumni, former students, or current students do not need to request transcripts.

All PERC workshops are graded as pass/fail unless the student requests otherwise. Classes can be taken for a letter grade; in that case, students are required to complete an academic product.

To ensure your space in the workshop of your choice, we recommend scheduling as soon as possible.

Online Classes
All online classes must be scheduled and payment submitted no later than one week prior to the class start date. This will allow appropriate time to prepare students for the class.

Also, all online classes will be meeting during the scheduled times and dates indicated. The College uses Moodle for its online course management system. The link below will give you more information about Moodle.

Grade Information
The timing of grade submission is at the discretion of the instructor; however, all grades for the PERC courses are due at the end of the semester. For example, courses that are held in February may not receive a grade (pass/fail or letter) until May. Transcripts will not be released until the grades have been submitted. Grades can be accessed at the end of the semester through the college's web utility called One Stop. More information about this utility will be shared in each class.

COURSE SCHEDULE
February 17 and 18
Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Dr. Fred Coulter

In a study published in October 2009, the rate of identifying people with autism has dropped to 1 in every 91 people. As more and more people are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a great understanding of them and their lives is needed by all people. In the first part of the workshop, participants will come to understand characteristics, thoughts, and behaviors of people with autism by viewing videos and reading articles. In the second part of the workshop, participants will research a topic of interest to them related to autism. The goal is that by the end of the workshop participants will have literature, materials, and resources that they can apply to the setting where they work or live.

February 24 - 25 - Online
Nutritional Interventions for Emotional, Cognitive, and Behavioral Well Being
- Emily Hayman

Students will learn the important role that vitamins, minerals, and diet play in the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral wellbeing of children. Current research has shown that depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism, aggression, and various other disorders can be significantly improved by making changes in diet and nutrition, both in children and adults. Students will learn the benefits of various vitamins, minerals, and natural foods. Video case studies will be explored, and students will gain a better understanding of how various dietary changes and nutritional supplementations can decrease problems associated with common disorders, and will gain a better understanding of how to adopt a holistic and healthy lifestyle for their own well-being.

Students will need access to a computer and internet. All course materials will be provided in PDF or Word document form if students would like to have a copy of printed course materials.

March 2 and 3
Building Positive Family/School Relationships

- Dr. Fred Coulter
A good connection between the classroom and home can have a positive impact on students. The problem is how to make and maintain the connection. In the first part of the workshop, participants will come to understand the change that America's families are going through by reading related articles and discussing systems theory. In the second part of the workshop participants will research a topic of interest to them related to family/school relationships. The goal is that by the end of the workshop participants will have articles, literature, and resources that they can apply in their work setting.

March 30 and 31
Physical Activity in the Classroom

- Dr. Matt Lydum
The National and Ohio standards, benchmarks, and grade band indicators are used to inform a workshop that explores all aspects of physical activity in the classroom. Participants will be exposed to current theory from a variety of disciplines and perspectives (education psychology, learning theory, pedagogy, physical education and health, growth and development, etc.). This theoretical and practical background will support collaborative learning with the objective of creating useful strategies and ideas for immediate use. As a bonus, participants will learn and participate in breathing and stretching routines that can be used to control stress for students and teachers!
