COURSE SCHEDULE
Online from February 1 - March 4, 2013
Building Positive Family/School Relationships
- Dr. Fred Coulter
A good connection between the classroom, school and home can have a positive impact on students. The problem is how to make and maintain the connection. In this workshop, participants will come to understand the change that America's families are going through by reading related articles and discussing systems theory. In addition, participants will research a topic of interest to them related to family/school relationships. The goal is that by the end of the workshop participants will have articles, literature, and resources that they can apply in their work setting.
The workshop will be offered online through Moodle. The online workshop will be open starting February 1, 2013 and close March 4, 2013. During that time participants will post to discussion forums and complete a self-designed assignment on the workshop's topic.
February 8 - 9, 2013
Making Learning Visible Through the Reggio Emilia Lens
- Karen McCoy, Ph.D.
Teaching is an intellectual process. Excellent teachers are mindful, deliberate, and reflective and create an environment in the classroom for students to do the same. The educators of Reggio Emilia, Italy have received global recognition for their work with young children. Participants in this workshop will be introduced to the teaching and learning philosophy of the Reggio Emilia approach and explore how they can imbed the Reggio Emilia principles in their own classroom.
March 1 - 2, 2013
Brain-Compatible Classroom Strategies
- Dr. Karen Bachman
All teachers want the magic solution to help their students achieve success in the classroom. This workshop will provide K-3 teachers with a generous amount of brain-based strategies to make this happen. These strategies are simple to use, take minutes to implement but the results are amazing. Teachers will learn strategies to improve students focus and attention, fine motor skills, and memorization as well as other best practices to enhance learning.
March 22 - 23, 2013
Understanding Autism
- Dr. Fred Coulter
In a study published in October 2009, the rate of identifying people with autism has dropped to 1 in every 91 people. As more and more people are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a deeper understanding of them and their lives is needed by all people. In the first part of the workshop, participants will come to understand characteristics, thoughts, and behaviors of people with autism by viewing videos and reading articles. In the second part of the workshop, participants will research a topic of interest to them related to autism. The goal is that by the end of the workshop participants will have literature, materials, and resources that they can apply to the setting where they work or live.
April 12 and 13, 2013
Partnering with Parents
-Karen McCoy, Ph.D.
Parenting is difficult. Although often joked about, babies do not enter the world with instructions attached to their foreheads. As a way to support our students, we can support parents with parenting fundamentals. This interactive workshop will detail a successful parenting program that provided parents with activities to encourage their thinking about the image they have of their child and their role as a parent.
