Presidential Service Leaders Program

The Defiance College Presidential Service Leaders program offers a prestigious opportunity for incoming students who have demonstrated a commitment to service and leadership.  This program is designed to recognize and cultivate these qualities, providing both a financial scholarship and unique experiential learning opportunities. 

Monthly meetings are focused on projects that address Defiance community needs and understanding them. This program provides opportunities for students to apply academic skills and knowledge in real-world contexts through service for the betterment of our local and regional communities. As a result, students gain valuable leadership and career readiness skills and develop an understanding of their place as civically-engaged leaders in their communities.

Scholarship

We offer a $5,000 renewable scholarship to applicants who demonstrate a record of service in their communities and who fulfill the requirements of the Presidential Service Leader program once they are enrolled at Defiance College.  Each year, this scholarship is awarded competitively to up to 5 incoming freshmen and 1 transfer student. Incoming students must participate in Scholarship Day to be considered for the scholarship.  Incoming freshmen must have a high school cumulative GPA of 3.5 to be considered.  Transfer students must interview and have a GPA of 3.5 from their previous institution to be considered.  Students can only apply for the Presidential Service Leaders Scholarship beginning their first year of entry at Defiance College.

Program Requirements & Expectations

To maintain the scholarship, student participants must fulfill the following requirements throughout the academic year:

  • Service Hours: Service Leaders must complete a minimum of 100 hours of service during the academic year.  These hours will be coordinated and monitored by the Director of the Presidential Service Leaders program.  Hours will be completed both on campus and at approved locations within the Defiance College community.  
  • Academic Performance: Service Leaders must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Ambassadorial Role: Service Leaders must serve as official ambassadors for the Admissions Office and other departments across Defiance College, representing the institution at various events and functions.  Time spent as an ambassador will count toward required hours of service each academic year.
  • Leadership Series: Service Leaders will attend one Leadership Series meeting per month during the academic year.
  • Leadership Conference: In the fall, Service Leaders will attend a mandatory, dedicated Leadership conference/weekend.  This event will be hosted by the McMaster School with the involvement of the President and coordinated by the Director of the Presidential Service Leader program and the Associate VP for Academic Affairs.  Students will be required to attend the Leadership conference/weekend each year.
