Opportunity to view nursing tribute film in Defiance

February 4, 2016

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College and the Northwest Ohio Nurses Association (NONA) will be partnering to show a nursing film and documentary. Two show times will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Schomburg Auditorium at Defiance College; the first at 4:30 p.m. and the second showing at 7:30 p.m.

The film being sponsored by NONA and Defiance College is The American Nurse: Healing America. Jane Schetter RN, MSN notes that a recent survey from Gallup finds that nursing is the most trusted profession in the United States, with respondents rating nurses highest for honesty and ethics. The film follows five nurses and their patients and explores the impact of nursing on their lives as well as the impact of the lives of the patients on the nurses. It explores issues such as the aging, poverty, war, prisons, and high-risk pregnancy and miscarriage.

Defiance College students in the McMaster School program will be selling raffle tickets for a book and DVD of The American Nurse. Both items are donated by NONA. The book will be given away at the 4:30 showing, the DVD at 7:30. Popcorn and beverages will also be sold as part of the fundraiser and for the convenience of attendees. Proceeds will be used toward supplies and teaching materials for the Health and Wellness and Breast Cancer Awareness projects in Belize.

Students will also have a table set up with information regarding the Defiance Cares Free Clinic, a student-led organization that’s part of Defiance College’s Project 701. The Defiance Cares Free Clinic is a collaboration among Mercy Defiance Hospital, ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, Mercy Defiance Clinic, and Defiance College. It offers free primary health care to residents of Defiance County who either do not have medical insurance or have an annual deductible greater than $5000.

Anyone interested in nursing as a career, interested in the impact and work nurses do, or who knows nurses in general should attend the film. Viewings will be free and open to the public. More information on the film, including the trailer, may be found on the film website at www.americannurseproject.com.

Although walk-ins are welcome, space is limited. Reserve your seat by e-mailing Jane Schetter, RN, MSN at jschetter@msn.com and include the number of people attending and the screening time of either 4:30 or 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact Jane Ransom at tippecanoe@buckeye-express.com or Rhonda Clayton at smileroclayton@gmail.com.
