Defiance College homecoming nears; honorees are announced

DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College will celebrate 2017 homecoming activities Oct. 6-7 with reunions, award presentations, and an alumni dinner.

Friday’s alumni homecoming dinner begins at 5 p.m. in the Weaner Community Center. At 7:15 p.m., awards will be presented in several categories.

The Alumni Citation for Academic Excellence will be presented to Judy Small Dally, Defiance, class of 1971 and 1994; and John Scheu, Sidney, class of 1972. Alumni Achievement Award recipients are Dale Bruskotter, Ottawa, class of 1974; and David Robinson, Alliance, class of 1976. Tim Leuzarder, deceased, class of 1967, was also honored with this award. Casey Gibson, Toledo, class of 2005 and 2010, will receive the Young Alumni Service Award.

The Schauffler Legacy Award will be presented to Terry Boyd, Columbus, class of 1978; and Carolyn Keilig, Hopkinton, N.H., class of 1976.

Also on Friday, there will be Homecoming parties for the Beta Sigma sorority and TKE fraternity at Kissner’s, downtown Defiance, starting at 8 p.m.

Saturday’s events kick off with the annual Alumni Varsity D breakfast to honor 2017 Hall of Fame inductees and Coaches of the Year. Hall of Fame inductees include James Berner, Springfield, class of 1994; Penni Bostelman, Greensburg, Ind., class of 1987; Chad Kahle, Denver, N.C., class of 2000; and Nate Schaublin, Napoleon, class of 2002.

Traditional bricks will be placed in front of the football stadium. Honorees will receive their plaques during the football halftime program.

Coaches of the Year for the 2016-2017 season are Cameron Coutcher, Waterville, class of 2001; and Brian Ziegler, Archbold, class of 1996.

Baseball and softball alumni reunions, the class of 1967 golden reunion, and Beta Sigma and TKE dinners are all scheduled on Saturday.

Coronation of this year’s homecoming queen and king and their court will take place at 1 p.m., prior to the Yellow Jackets football game with Manchester University. Before the game, all are welcome to a Yellow Jacket tailgate at the stadium. Reunion groups meeting at the tailgate lunch include the class of 1967, Beta Sigma, the football team from 1967, and all McMaster School Scholars and Fellows.
