DEFIANCE, Ohio - This semester, nineteen DC students worked on an identity design for local non-profit Together We Can Make A Difference Initiatives. The non-profit’s mission is to “assist people of all ages in Northwest Ohio with basic needs and resources that are not available with any government assistance programs.”

The project, which allowed students to use their creativity to support their community and gain real experience working with a client, was part of an Intro to Graphic Design course by Assistant Professor of Design Beverly Fanning-Simmons.

After four weeks of immersing themselves in the creative process, including researching, brainstorming, sketching, and rendering, students presented their final designs to Kelli Burkhardt, the founder and executive director of Together We Can Make A Difference Initiatives. The top ten identities were featured in this year’s Academic Colloquium as part of the “Design Make a Difference” showcase.Student designs

“It is a win-win for the students, the client, and the College,” stated Professor Fanning-Simmons. “The students gain industry experience and learn about the importance of being a citizen designer, the client receives professional design services they could otherwise not afford, and Defiance College continues to support the local community.”
