Exhibit featuring history of DC buildings on campus through October

October 9, 2018

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The 2nd annual DC Archives Special Collections Exhibit titled “Buildings of Defiance College” will run through Friday, Oct. 26, in the Women’s Commission Gallery on the campus of Defiance College. Curated by Lead Librarian and Coordinator of Metadata and Archives Barb Sedlock and Assistant Professor of Design Beverly Fanning-Simmons, the exhibit introduces viewers to the buildings of Defiance College from the 20th century to today. Its purpose is to offer a brief history of the present campus, as well as give recognition to the buildings no longer standing.

“To quote Winston Churchill, ‘We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us,’” commented Fanning-Simmons. “While some structures have been demolished and others rebuilt or renovated, they all serve as a connection to the College’s past.”

DC alumni, faculty, students, and staff, along with members of the community, are invited to visit the exhibit until Oct. 26. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

”Buildings have memory because of the people who occupy them,” Fanning-Simmons continued. “Every individual who worked, taught, studied, played, and lived on campus has a personal connection to the space. As soon as I began working on the exhibit with Barb [Sedlock], I realized it was less about architectural structures and more about memories and experiences.”

The Women’s Commission Gallery is located on the DC campus off Sessions Street. Founded in 1971 by the Defiance Women’s Commission, the mission of the Women’s Commission Gallery is to serve DC by enriching student life and cultivating knowledge and understanding of the arts.
