A part-time work-study job is one sure way to help out with the expenses of college. College supervisors realize students must be students first and that academic achievement is an important priority. In most cases, they can be very flexible in scheduling working hours and making accommodations for exams etc. Defiance College offers Federal Work-study and Regular Payroll employment to its students. During a regular academic year nearly 500 students work in these programs.
Federal Work Study (FWS)
Federal Work Study is a federally-funded program which provides on-campus or community service employment to students with financial need as demonstrated by the FAFSA. Students work up to 11 hours each week to earn their Federal Work Study award, but generally are eligible to elect to work less if they choose. The Federal Work Study award eligibility will be reflected on a student’s award letter. The amount awarded to the student is the maximum that may be earned under the FWS program by the student during the academic year.
Regular Payroll (REG)
In some cases, campus Work Study Opportunities may be available to students who do not qualify for the need-based Federal Work Study program. Interested students must apply and be approved by the DC Financial Aid Office to be eligible to work.
Preference for FWS or REG will be given to full time students.
Jobs for students in both FWS and REG will be accessible on the Defiance College website via College Central Website. Students are responsible to search for jobs, arrange for interviews, and complete job applications to secure a position. Students must complete the following forms before they will be permitted to work:
1. State Tax Form (State of Ohio Exemption Certificate)
2. Federal Tax Form (Federal W-4 Form)
3. Immigration Reform and Control Act Form (I-9)
4. Work Authorization Contract (WAC)
Both FWS and REG timecards must be turned in to DC Business Office by the date indicated on the timecard. Students are paid on the 25th of each month or by the date indicated on the timecard for actual hours worked. Checks can be picked up in the Business Office.
Defiance College has strong ties to the surrounding community. A number of the off- and on-campus positions allow students to assist the greater Defiance community. See the McMaster Program web page for more information about DC's involvement in the community.
