Spring 2007 Symposium | Fall 2007 Symposium
The Carolyn M. Small Honors Program provides opportunities for all Defiance College students regardless of their major, to participate in an honors curriculum. Students who meet the requirements of the program will be designated as Carolyn M. Small Honor Scholars.
Honors Program Goals
- To provide opportunities beyond the curriculum of the College that support academic excellence through engagement in research, development of reasoning abilities, and intentional learning;
- To engage students in the development of a sense of coherence between intellectual realms, founded in a traditional liberal education and the real world;
- To promote the development of a sensitivity to the diverse cultures of the world and an understanding of the complexity of world interdependence;
- To model innovative ways to teach and learn
- To promote for Honors students the kind of support and camaraderie that contributes to a successful college experience
What do Honors Scholars do?
Admissions Guidelines
- ACT composite score 27 or higher, top 10% rank in high school, or high school cumulative GPA or 3.5/4.0;
- one Faculty Nomination (Form B) and two Faculty Recommendations (Form C)
- completed and submitted Application for Admission
- Transfer cumulative GPA of 3.5/.4.0;
- one Faculty Nomination (Form B) and two Faculty Recommendations (Form C)
- completed and submitted Application for Admission
- cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.0;
- one Faculty Nomination (Form B) and two Faculty Recommendations (Form C)
- completed and submitted Application for Admission

Requirements for continued membership in the program
- maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25/4.0;
- sixty percent attendance and participation at meetings and required events;
- sixty percent attendance and participation at meetings and required events;
- attendance at three cultural/academic events per semester;
- completion of one Honors Option Course during the academic year;
- presentation at both fall and spring Honors Symposia
Graduation as an Honors Scholar
Honors Scholars who complete the entire program requirements will be recognized as Carolyn M. Small Honor Scholars during Honors Convocation and the Graduation ceremony.
