Hundreds of bicyclists from around the country rode into Defiance on Wednesday setting up camp on the Defiance College campus. The cyclists are participating in the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure which is focusing this year on Northwest Ohio and following a route from Norwalk to Defiance. Despite the hot temperatures, cyclists have been acquainting themselves with the campus and the community. They will spend a second night at DC before heading out on Friday morning.
Dr. Marian R. Plant, associate professor of Christian education and Schauffler Chair at Defiance College, recently had her book Faith Formation in Vital Congregations published. The book provides a framework for ordained or lay pastors; professional church educators; family life coordinators; educational ministry volunteers; and committee, task force, or board members to provide strategies for preparing the way forward in adult Christian formation.

The Film Director: Tim Burton will be offered during summer session II with classes being held from 6 – 8:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 29 – August 7. The class will use the idea of the director as auteur to explore the works of film director Tim Burton.

Dr. Timothy Rickabaugh will serve as interim vice president for academic affairs and academic dean at Defiance College beginning June 15. Appointed for a two-year term, Rickabaugh will serve as chief academic officer while maintaining his existing responsibilities as professor of exercise science.

Defiance College’s 122nd commencement was held Sunday, May 10 with two-hundred and five graduates awarded diplomas. A beautifully sunny day (with just a little wind), the campus greens were filled with family members eagerly awaiting the chance to congratulate their graduate.

Eligible military veterans of the post-9/11 era will be able to attend Defiance College tuition-free beginning with the 2009 fall semester. The College plans to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program, part of the post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, when it begins on August 1.

Mark C. Gordon, dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a former faculty member at Columbia University, has been named president of Defiance College. He is the 18th president in the 159-year history of the College.
