Schomburg Series
37th Season Performances

Welcome to the 2012-2013 Schomburg Series
It is with great pleasure that we present the 2012-2013 Schomburg Series line up for this new season. This year, we bring you the five performances briefly described in this brochure starting off with a return engagement by popular electric violinist Tracey Silverman who filled our auditorium two years ago. In November we host two unique Schomburg events including the National Players performance of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Guys with Guitars which features local favorite Neil Jacobs as part of this dynamic trio. In February the popular act Dala will bring you terrific harmonies in an exciting presentation on the Defiance College Schomburg stage. The Good Lovlies will perform at the historic Valentine Theater in March with a 7:30 pm performance in an event co sponsored by DCCC. A brief description of each performance is described below. Should you desire specific details, each artist or group maintains a web presence including biographical information.

It is my simple hope that you will consider supporting the Defiance College Schomburg Series this year with the purchase of a season ticket. Look over this brochure, venues, times and places and consider being a part of this grand tradition.

Together, let’s keep culture alive and healthy in our community and surrounding area.

Sincerely,
Douglas R. Fiely
Director, Schomburg Series

Performances

Tracy Silverman
Tuesday, September 11, 2012
7:00 p.m. Schomburg Auditoriu
Tracy Silverman Lauded by the BBC as “the greatest living exponent of the electric violin”, Tracy Silverman’s groundbreaking work with the 6-string electric violin defies musical boundaries. The world’s first concert electric violinist, Silverman has been the subject of two major orchestral commissions. An international touring artist, Tracy has performed at major concert venues from Sao Paulo to Vienna, from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl. In 1999 he was awarded Artist in Residence status by the city of Hamburg, Germany and is a frequent concert attraction in Brazil.

Animal Farm presented by:
The National Players

Thursday, November 8, 2012
11:00 a.m. Schomburg Auditorium
Animal Farm
11:00 a.m. Schomburg Auditorium
Revolution has broken out on Manor Farm -- the animals have claimed their independence! Humans are banished, and the new “Animal Farm” will be a beautiful egalitarian paradise. Pigs, horses, goats, donkeys and dogs -- all animals are equal. They can build their new utopia, but can they resist the corruption that led to the human’s downfall? From the author of 1984, this chilling and provocative fable is brought to the stage with the focused clarity and spark you’ve come to expect from The National Players.

Guys with Guitars

Tuesday, November 13, 2012
7:00 p.m. Schomburg Auditorium
Guys with Guitars
Guys with Guitars features three regionally recognizable solo musicians - Neil Jacobs, Doug Wood and Tim Farrell - joining together for a concert event reminiscent of the old Windham Hill Concert Series. Neil Jacobs transforms his 12-string acoustic guitar into his own personal orchestra and shares his fascinating stories with the audience. Doug Wood’s contemplative, melody-driven music can shift from a sweet solo fingerstyle guitar piece to a composition looping energetic world rhythms. Rounding out the trio is Darren Frate who’s innovative work on the bass is reminiscent of bass masters like Jaco Pastorius and Michael Manring. Using foot pedals and looping, he's able to create fully orchestrated melodic tunes live on stage.

Dala
Tuesday, February 12, 2013
7:00 p.m. Schomburg Auditorium

DalaJuno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala write and sing in harmony best described as angelic. The sheer joy with which they perform is infectious, turning first-time listeners into instant fans. Dala are equally entertaining between songs, telling funny and down to earth stories that make every show unique.

The Good Lovelies
Thursday, March 21, 2013
7:30 p.m. Historic Valentine Theater

The Good Lovelies
Funny and upbeat, with just a pinch of sass, the Good Lovelies’ textbook three-part harmonies, constant instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter have enlivened the folk music landscape since they joined forces in 2006. Lighthearted songwriting and irresistibly buoyant dispositions have made them the darlings of the summer festival circuit. Let the Rain Fall, their third full-length album, was recently nominated for the 2012 Juno for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year.
