Schomburg Series
33rd Season Performances

Welcome to the 2008-2009 Schomburg Series
It is with great pleasure and excitement that we present the 2008-2009 Schomburg Series for its 33rd year. This program schedule will delight you with its variety – featuring components of gypsy, jazz, swing, Celtic music, and folk and contemporary ballads, all in the strong tradition of quality entertainment you have come to expect from the Schomburg Series.

This year, Defiance College will be working closely with the Defiance Community Cultural Council to bring you these evenings of entertainment in a variety of locations. Neil Jacobs and American Gypsy will perform at the Arts and Media Center, at Third Street and Wayne in Defiance on September 23. The second event, featuring Dwight Lenox and Orchestra, will be held at the Historic Valentine Theater on October 23 in collaboration with the DCCC. The Dave Munnelly Band, Lee Murdock and Ernie Hawkins will perform in DC’s own Schomburg Auditorium as the schedule indicates.

As always, Defiance College is proud to bring high caliber national and regional talent to our area. This would not be possible without the partnership with you, our individual contributors, our corporate sponsors, and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Together we are able to make this series a reality.

It is our hope that you will consider new, increased, and continued support of the Schomburg Series through your participation in one of the individual or corporate packages outlined in this program. Most of all, we hope you will experience the joy and the enrichment that these performances offer.

Sincerely,
Douglas R. Fiely
Director, Schomburg Series

Performances

Neil Jacobs and American Gypsy
Tuesday, September 23, 2008
7:00 p.m. Schomburg Auditorium
Neil Jacobs and American GypsyInternationally acclaimed 12-string guitarist / composer Neil Jacobs, Ukrainian master violinist Arkadiy Gips, and award-winning bassist, Steven Fox form this soulful, high-energy Gypsy “power trio.” American Gypsy has thrilled and mesmerized audiences across the United States and Europe as they transform Gypsy, jazz, and world folk into intriguing new American music. Both Neil Jacobs and Arkadiy Gips have a history of performing and traveling with the Gypsies of Europe. Neil resided and studied with Gypsies of Spain from 1994-1996, and Arkadiy traveled with a Gypsy group from Bulgaria in the 80’s. Steven Fox is a graduate of Ohio State University where he earned his degree in double bass performance. His musical expertise includes everything from bluegrass to African music and beyond. Dwight Lenox and Orchestra
Dwight Lennox and OrchestraThursday, October 23, 2008
7:30 p.m. Historic Valentine Theater

From blues to ballads and jazz to swing, Dwight shines. His impeccable instincts and mellow sound have garnered the attention of some of the finest musicians in the industry. He’s performed with Sammy Tucker and renowned organist Hank Marr. He’s been showcased alongside the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Bobbie Humphrys, Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Mann. And as featured vocalist with the 17-piece Columbus Jazz Orchestra, he’s shared the stage with Harold Jones and Carmen Bradford. Dwight’s fluid style lends itself to a vast repertoire from Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, James Ingram, Stevie Wonder, Lou Rawls and many more. But his raw abilities are uniquely evidenced in his performance of original music.

Lee Murdock
Lee MurdockTuesday, November 11, 2008
7:00 p.m. Schomburg Auditorium

Lee Murdock has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories in the Great Lakes. There is an amazing timelessness in this music. Great Lakes songs are made of hard word, hard living, ships that go down and ships that come in. The music is grounded in the work song tradition, from the rugged days of lumberjacks and wooden sailing schooners. Lee’s fans have discovered a sweetwater treasure in his songs about the Great Lakes, lives of sailors and fishermen, lighthouse keepers, ghosts, shipwrecks, outlaws and everyday heroes. Murdock’s concert coincides with the anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975.

The David Munnelly Band
Tuesday, March 17, 2009
7:00 p.m. Schomburg Auditorium

The David Munelly BandStarted by Irish button accordion player David Munnelly, the David Munnelly Band is one of the hottest bands on the traditional Celtic music scene. The exciting sextet combines button accordion, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, piano, bodhrán and flute for a high-spirited instrumental sound colored with a bit of jazz and ragtime, topped with the singing of All-Ireland champion Shauna Mullin and the extraordinary percussive dancing of American Nic Gareiss. “The Irish band to see” (Irish Voice) has won special acclaim for incorporating the sound of the 1920s and 1930s and such bands from that era as the Flanagan Brothers with its traditional roots. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with these outstanding Irish musicians.
